Merchant
Ivory Filming for "The Golden Bowl" at
Syon Park.
The
Oscar winning team Ismail Merchant and James
Ivory are currently filming The Golden
Bowl at Syon Park country estate in
London.
The
Golden Bowl, based on the Henry James
novel is adapted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala,
twice Oscar winner. This is Merchant Ivory's
43rd film collaboration. Set in the UK and
Italy it stars Angelica Huston, Nick Nolte,
Uma Thurman, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Northam,
James Fox and Madeline Potter.
Syon
House is privately owned by the Duke of
Northumberland and lies eight miles from
the centre of London. It includes thirty
acres of gardens and a spectacular Great
Conservatory. The Golden Bowl has
been allowed access to some of its most
impressive rooms, including the Green Drawing
Room and the state apartment's Ante Room,
the latter designed by Robert Adams. Several
scenes will be shot at this location.
Formerly
a 15th century abbey founded by Henry V.
Syon House was first converted into a home
in 1547. Since then it has witnessed several
historic events; Henry VIII's own coffin
awaited its Windsor burial at Syon House
in 1547. It was where Lady Jane Grey reluctantly
accepted the crown in 1553 and Queen Victoria
spent many a day in the grounds of the Park
as a young girl.
The
Golden Bowl brings together again such
accomplished technicians as three times
Oscar nominee Tony Pierce-Roberts. He has
shot eight Merchant Ivory films including
A Room with a View, Howards End and
The Remains of the Day. The film's costume
designer John Bright has worked with Merchant
Ivory on eleven films. He has won two Oscars
for his work on A Room with a View
and Howards End. The music will be
composed by Richard Robbins who has collaborated
with Merchant Ivory on fourteen times so
far. His scores for Howards End and
The Remains of the Day have both
earned him Academy Award nominations.

Ismail
Merchant, the film's producer comments,
"For us to do another Henry James novel
is a great pleasure, particularly one with
such rich characters and a powerful story
carrying very contemporary overtones."
The
Golden Bowl recounts the lives of an
immensely rich, art-collecting American
tycoon, his married daughter and the adulterous
affair that nearly consumes their family
when the father marries a beautiful younger
woman. Though set in Edwardian England,
the story has great contemporary relevance
as its plot shifts and countershifts within
a web of personal relationships.
This
is the third Henry James novel being brought

after The Europeans produced nearly
